Steps to Become a Registered Behavior Technician®

Must be over 18.

Must have a high school diploma.

Must undergo and pass a criminal background check, which typically includes fingerprinting.

Must complete at least 40 hours of training in Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) principles and procedures from a qualified training provider.

Competency Assessment: After completing the 40-hour training, you must pass a competency assessment. This assessment is typically conducted by a Board-Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) or a Board-Certified Assistant Behavior Analyst (BCaBA). It involves demonstrating your skills in applying ABA principles and procedures.

Pass the RBT Exam: After meeting the training and supervision requirements, you must pass the RBT exam, which is administered by the BACB. The exam assesses your knowledge of ABA principles and procedures.
